Today I hosted a "seaside preppy" baby shower for one of my very best friends, Sarah. Here are a few details from the day! Whales, gators, sailboats, and more!

Farewell Dinner - Four Seasons Bosphorus, Istanbul

Our farewell dinner was "Flavors of Turkey and the World" at the beautiful Four Seasons Bosphorus Hotel. I wish we could have stayed a night here!

This was the cocktail hour set up for us on the Atik Pasha Terrace, overlooking the Bosphorus...this picture doesn't do it justice. Marc and I actually missed the transportation for cocktail hour and had to send for a private car from the hotel...oops! Glad we got a picture though!

This was our gorgeous table setting in the Atik Pasha ballroom. Love the flowers, pretty crystal napkin rings and menus. Dinner was goat cheese salad, prawn, ricotta stuffed ravioli and zucchini flower, sea bass and orange crusted beef, followed by pistachio sponge and raspberry with coconut creme brulee and strawberries..yum! We enjoyed Turkish food, dance, and music, as well as a slideshow of the professional pictures from the trip. It was great!

Grand Bazaar - Istanbul, Turkey

After our visit to Topkapi Palace, we visited the Grand Bazaar, which occupies a whole quarter of the city. There are different sections for various items such as carpets, jewelry, glazed tiles and pottery, fake purses, food items (like Turkish Delight and tea), etc...4000 vendors all selling the same stuff! Not just for tourists, locals shop here too. It was overwhelming to say the least. We only had a little time so just bought a few glazed tile coasters, a couple pieces of inexpensive jewelry (although you could spend thousands), and a shirt.

Topkapi Palace - Istanbul, Turkey

This entrance hall in the Harem (where the Sultan's 400 wives and family lived!) was guarded by Eunuchs! 17th century tiles on the walls...

Apartments of the Queen Mother....

Double baths of the Sultan and the Queen Mother with gilded iron grill to protect them from murder attempts while bathing.

The Imperial Hall with the throne of the sultan, believed to have been built in the late 16th century. The hall served as the official reception hall of the sultan as well as for the entertainment of the Harem. The room has an 18th century blue and white tile belt surrounding the walls bearing calligraphic inscriptions, classical 16th century paintings, and Venetian glass mirrors. A secret door behind a mirror allowed the sultan a safe passage.

The Courtyard of the Favourites, expanded in the 18th century, forms the last section of the Harem. Not sure, but I think this was where the Sultan's favorite wives lived!

We toured the Imperial Treasury, which held an 86 carat diamond, and other jewelry made of gold and other precious materials like emeralds, etc...but no cameras were allowed inside. Outside was this fabulous lookout area.

Day at Sea

It was so nice to have a restful day at sea before arriving in Istanbul. After a day at the pool, we received this beautiful Whitney English Invitation to dinner (we received beautiful stationery every day, but what a pleasant surprise to get Whitney English!)...

However, we decided to order room service for dinner while enjoying the sunset from our patio instead...this picture was taken in the middle of the Black Sea...enjoy!

Livadia Palace, the home of the WWII Yalta Conference between Stalin, Churchill, and Roosevelt. Roosevelt stayed here during the conference...

The views were beautiful.....

This place was so cool.... The Swallow's Nest is a castle perched on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Black Sea. It it also called "The Castle of Love" because it was built in 1912 by a German architect for a girl he loved.

Here we are eating at a little restaurant inside the castle...table for 2 with a view...

We were entertained by a Ukranian harpist during lunch...

Back near the port was a bustling seafront promenade...

That night, our dinner was a "Ukranian BBQ Evening" outside on the pool deck while still in port. We had great food (lamb, pig, risotto, etc.), great entertainment, and great views!

And we're off....to Istanbul....

Oleg Danovski Ballet Theatre - Romania

After our lunch at the winery in Romania, we headed to the Oleg Danovski Ballet Theatre for a classical Romanian performance and more wine!

The building and the ballet were beautiful, but it was very, very hot.

On my 30th birthday, we enjoyed lunch and a tour/tasting at Clos de Colombes winery in Constanza, Romania...one of the smallest wineries in Romania, it was the dream of a French woman who turned it into an award winning vineyard. Romania has the 6th best wine producing area in Europe and 10th largest wine producer in the world. Who knew? Not me at least!

I'm back! My trip was amazing! I am going to try and play catch up and do a bunch of blog posts with just a few highlights of the trip (there's too much to include!). First stop was the Hotel Grand Bretagne in Athens, Greece.

Remember this post? Well here's a little update. 12 down, 18 to go, 14 more days.... and yes I changed a couple items on the list and my husband helped me with a couple too....so I guess I cheated a little. But I'm happy to report I FINALLY finished reading Eat, Pray, Love, I had a Paper Concierge open house, I donated 5 garbage bags of clothes to The Salvation Army, got a new digital camera, learned to make pesto, and most importantly got a part-time job. Starting September 1st, I will be working at Barbara's Paper Bag, a cute little stationery store in downtown Birmingham. Instead of going back into the corporate world, I have decided to explore a new passion...stationery! I am really excited to work in this industry. My Paper Concierge website will still be active for the next 2 or 3 weeks, but after that I hope you will come visit me at Barbara's for all your stationery needs! And now I better get moving on the rest of this list!

I love this idea I saw on Hello, Splendor and Making It Lovely (and apparently a lot of other people do this and blog about it too). It involves making a list of 30 things you want to accomplish before turning 30. Well, in 30 days, I will be turning 30! So my 30 before 30 list has to also be done in 30! This 30th birthday also marks 1 year since I lost my job so it's time to kick my butt in gear! Here is an attainable list of things I would like to do (one each day...mostly cleaning stuff out mixed in with some fun things)... in order to start my thirties feeling both organized and good! I will update it along the way. Ok how many times did I just say 30?

I love these clipboards (and these too), but never really saw much of a use for them in my life...until now. What a great idea: hang them on the wall (in your office, kitchen..whatever) and clip important papers, swatches, receipts, etc. to them. This way you can display their beautiful design and put them to good use at the same time! You don't have to have 6 of them to do this...just one or two would be cute too!

First of all, sorry for my lack of posts...I was in Washington D.C. over the weekend and I've been sick. =(

Anyways, my Pink Blackberry Pearl and I have had two wonderful years together, but I really need a new phone. Here are a few options...

1. Blackberry Curve in Smoky Violet - I think this is a better version of what I have now...and I love the color! =)

2. Motorola Backflip - I've never had anything like this, but my friend who works for AT&T thought I'd love this one because of the Social Media features.

3. IPhone - I would have to switch from Verizon to AT&T or wait for Verizon to carry it.

I would have to get this pretty blue case of course...

And advice for me??

I actually made these "cosmo cupcakes", but ran out of time, so didn't put the toppers on them. They were still cute and yummy. Sex and The City 2 Review

So, since I saw the movie a week ago already, I have been meaning to share some thoughts.

I see the film is getting bad reviews, but personally, I loved it! I admit it got off to a bit of a slow start, there were a few corny lines, and yes..it was looong....but I was much more impressed with this one as opposed to the first (marry someone anyway after they leave you at the altar? i don't think so!!). So here's what I loved about Sex and The City 2:

"We made a deal ages ago.. Men, babies...it doesn't matter...we're soulmates".

It goes without saying that a night out with your girlfriends is more than worth the cost of the ticket. But better yet, I loved the message the film sends about friendship. Regardless of whether these women are single or married, with or without kids, they always find time for each other.

"The Real Housewife of Abu Dhabi"

This movie had me laughing the entire time. Liza Minnelli's "Single Ladies", the Nanny, Miranda trying to speak Arabic....hilarious!! (Although it doesn't hurt that one of my girlfriends just happens to speak Arabic and was laughing hysterically at this).

"Me and You. Just - Us Two."

The storyline of "the four friends finding themselves in - and fighting against - the traditional roles of marriage, motherhood, and more" was easy to relate to. I know I could relate to Carrie, after being married 2.5 years, no kids, lots of TV and carry out, and perhaps most of all.....

"Cheating on fashion with furniture"

That's what I've been doing too! Carrie, just like me, had spent the last couple years replacing her love for fashion with a new hobby: decorating her (and Big's) new home. So, this movie had fashion AND furniture! (I will do a follow-up post on these next!).

So, that's what I loved about the movie! And I didn't expect too much going into it. For me, I looked at it as funny and lighthearted, a great night out with the girls, and nothing more. That being said, I have to mention one more reason I loved it. The movie had me reminiscing about a study abroad trip I took almost 10 years ago....Although a bit embarrassing (and terrible quality I might add), I had to share some of my old photos that I think resemble the ones from the movie! Just much less glamorous!

Trip Itinerary

Here is the itinerary for our upcoming trip this August!

Day 1: We board the ship after a one-night stay and tour of Athens, Greece.

Days 2-3: We will cross the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea via the Bosporous Strait, arriving in Nessebur, Bulgaria the following morning.

Day 4: It's my 30th birthday and I will be spending it in Constanza, Romania!

Day 5: This day will be spent in Yalta, Ukraine.

Days 6-7: The Silver Spirit will sail south towards the Turkish Coast and arrive in Istanbul, Turkey the following afternoon.

Day 8: It's time to disembark the ship in Istanbul and head to the airport. I only wish we had more time there!

I am sooooo excited about a big trip I will be going on in August! I have been looking forward to this trip for a long time coming. First stop - Athens, Greece! We will be staying one night at the Hotel Grand Bretagne. During my stay, I will have to make sure to eat at least one meal at the Roof Garden restaurant, with views of the Acropolis, Olympic Stadium, and more. I might also have to enjoy afternoon tea and cupcakes at the Winter Garden restaurant and I sure wouldn't mind an Ouzo Oil Massage at the Spa! =)

A thought to share

... I just finished taking an evening class at Stanford. The last lecture was on the mind-body connection--the relationship between stress and disease. The speaker (head of psychiatry at Stanford) said, among other things, that one of the best things that a man could do for his health is to be married to a woman whereas for a woman, one of the best things she could do for her health was to nurture her relationships with her girlfriends. At first everyone laughed, but he was serious.

Women connect with each other differently and provide support systems that help each other to deal with stress and difficult life experiences. Physically this quality "girlfriend time" helps us to create more seratonin--a neurotransmitter that helps combat depression and can create a general feeling of well being. Women share feelings whereas men often form relationships around activities. They rarely sit down with a buddy and talk about how they feel about certain things or how their personal lives are going. Jobs? Yes. Sports? Yes. Cars? Yes. Fishing, hunting, golf? Yes. But their feelings?--rarely. Women do it all of the time. We share from our souls with our sisters, and evidently that is very good for our health. He said that spending time with a friend is just as important to our general health as jogging or working out at a gym.

There's a tendency to think that when we are "exercising" we are doing something good for our bodies, but when we are hanging out with friends, we are wasting our time and should be more productively engaged--not true. In fact, he said that failure to create and maintain quality personal relationships with other humans is as dangerous to our physical health as smoking! So every time you hang out to shmooze with a gal pal, just pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself for doing something good for your health! We are indeed very very lucky. Sooooo let's toast to our friendship with our girlfriends. Evidently it's very good for our health.
